System Components

This Whipple supercharger is fitted with all the necessary components, to make driving more enjoyable.

Screw-shaped Rotors

Unlike Roots systems, the twin-screw, just as its name suggests, has two rotors that operate in close proximity to one another, but don’t actually touch. A good working space exists between these two rotors, making the meshing efficient at its job.

Differentiated by their features, the “male or inner” side of this rotor has three lobes, smaller openings at the intake end, and an asymmetrical statue. The “female or outer” side, usually has five to six lobes and larger openings, at the intake end, for better compression.

Although different, both these rotors work in perfect harmony, to achieve maximum airflow within the intake system.

Conical Screw Compressor

Distinguishable from the dual type compressor, this conical taper is designed to reduce the pockets of space, as the air nears discharge. In turn, this minimizes leakage of air, and allows a much higher compression rate, in a single cycle.

Both parts of the conical screw compressor function within their axis, but the inner rotor deviates by a small angle, making compression possible.

This positive displacement pump is vital to the compression process. In its effort to increase and decrease the volume of air, this gerotor creates a vacuum, which allows smoother transitioning of air.

Dense, warm air is sucked out, while the cooler air is allowed in and with oxygen in abundance, your car’s power boosts significantly.

Intercooling system

After compression has occurred, the gas is cooled down by this air to liquid system. Its main function is to remove the waste heat from the compressed gas, making the engine more fuel burning efficient.

It is mounted at the top of your truck’s engine, blending well so that it’s hard to even notice its there. This cooler’s efficiency allows you to save on fuel, and add a versatile look to your truck.

This Whipple supercharger kit comes with a one year warrant and is a quick bolt on installation taking less than three hours to complete.

As one of the best aftermarket superchargers, this Procharger can single handedly compete with the best positive displacement systems in the market. It offers the largest gain in power, cooler air charge temperatures, and is an easy to install, quick bolt on system.

With this blower, you’re sure of an economical fuel burn rate, unparalleled performance, and better drivability. It’s good for trucks that are frequently on the road, want to increase towing capacity, or diversify the trucks applications.

This air to air system is lightweight and fits right at the top of your engine, integrating well with the engine system. Being a centrifugal supercharger, the Procharger operates with a single rotor.

System Components

This centrifugal supercharger has key components that work together to compress air, and as a result, increase the engine’s performance. The main components include an impeller, compressor housing, diffuser, and transmission.

Let’s see how each one works

Just like rotors in the twin screw rotors, an impeller, is the component that drives all action within the Procharger. It rotates at high speeds and thus, draws in air quickly creating pressure that eventually causes compression.

Speeds on this impeller can be anything from 50,000 to 60,000 RPM. This improves airflow within an engine system and boosts your Silverado’s power.

This impeller is durable, can withstand high operating temperatures, and is able to continuously perform at the highest RPMs.

Compressor Housing (Volute)

The volute is made to match the impellers design for compatibility. This compressor housing is where air flowing into the system is gathered, before being delivered to a pipe downstream.

Aluminum is the more preferred to steel and other castings, on the material as it is stronger, corrosion-resistant, and versatile, while on the road.

The weight of this housing is proportional, meaning it has a huge capacity to accommodate air pressure, coming from the diffuser.

Between the volute and impeller is this diffuser that controls the velocity of air in the system. It is a stationary vane-like structure, surrounding the impeller. That converts the less pressure, high speed air, to high pressure, low speed air.

Once the air molecules hit these vanes, they are slowed down to allow for a better entry into the housing outlet. The diffuser is made to work for years without any problems, while keeping the kinetic energy of air into the system, in check.

This crankshaft pulley, is connected to a drive belt and allows the engine to run smoothly without any glitches. As a result the performance and power of the vehicle increases.

It is responsible for the mechanical aspect of ensuring the crankshaft rotates, moving the wheels faster, and distributing power to the truck.

The smooth running of this pulley, prolongs the lifespan of several other engine components, and is crucial, for dampening engine vibrations.

This pulley can last the full shelf life of the car however, it can also go for 10 years, if not well taken care-of.

During transmission, these ball bearings support the shafts in the internal gears that take in the drive loads. They are evenly placed throughout the system, reducing the effect of wear and tear in the driving process.

These centrifugal bearings can withstand high speed movement, and cancel any noise coming from the engine.

For greater speed and desired boost, this gear helps the impeller achieve its goals of greater power. The sun-gear for example, is connected to the impeller shaft, while the ring gear connects with the engine’s crankshaft via belts.

Aeration Pump

Located just below where transmission occurs, this aeration pump has self-conditioned oil that lubricates the ball bearings. This pump converts kinetic energy, into hydrodynamic energy, enabling fluid flow, in the system.

You can unleash the full potential of your 5.3 Silverado using the Magunson TSV1900 supercharger system. It offers instant torque, cooling, and fuel economy, to the truck, and as a result, boosts the power.

In fact, you get 6psi of boost, power gains of up to 120 horsepower, and 120 foot-pounds of torque, at the rear wheels. Everything for a smoother, faster, and better ride.

This 6th generation Root system has a pair of rotors that blow air into the intake port at high speed. As the air increases inside the port, it becomes too much to hold, and is then compressed.

This causes greater fuel combustion and consequently, greater power to your truck. As with most Root superchargers, the TSV1900, goes on top of the truck’s engine, with the air intake protruding, like a hot rod.

System Components

Of course, all that couldn’t be possible, without each individual component, playing its part. Let’s see what some of these critical parts are, and how they work together to make this supercharger system a success.

In the past, Roots superchargers had two-lobed rotors that would be enough to get the most out of your engine. However, the more modern blowers like the TSV1900, have three lobes to charge the combustion air in vehicles.

Each rotor twists on its own axis of rotation, in a continuous cycle, to make sure the surges in pressure are controlled.

On the inside of this supercharger, are rotary vanes (extensions of the rotors), that pump air between the housing walls and the rotors. These lobed-vanes direct the air to the discharge end where pressure accumulates and finally, compression occurs.

To prevent friction that causes wearing out, these vanes slightly deviate from the axis and therefore, cannot come into contact.

Air inlet and Outlet

Once the rotors are in motion, air is sucked in through the inlet at the front, which then, proceeds to enter the housing. Using cooling fins, the air is cooled down, during this process. At the other far end, is the outlet where the cooler, compressed air, is discharged.

Helical gears

Right in the middle of the pulley and rotary vanes, are two helical gears that rotate in a paralleled motion, to drive the second rotor.

Unlike spur gears that run on a straight line, the teeth of these helical gears rotate at a certain angle, slightly deviant from the axis. This angle is what we call the helix angle and is the reason for naming them, the helical gears.

When meshing of these gears ends, it is more of a gradual process where the tooth slips out, rather than an abrupt stop. It is very useful, in cancelling out noise, coming from the gearbox.

The efficiency of these gears, allows for higher torque transmission.

Driving pulley

Mounted at the very end of this supercharger shaft, is this pulley, with a size matching the speed at which, the blower turns. As the blower spins, more air is packed into the engine, meaning better fuel combustion, and greater horsepower.

It is attached by six bolts to the input hub, is interchangeable, and enables you to drive your truck, for long hours, off-road.

Belt Drive

This belt drive, rotates the rotary vanes and is always in contact with the pulley. The friction generated between this belt and pulley, transmits more power to the system.

The tension of this belt is kept in check by the tensioning systems of the driving pulley. This makes the belt give out quality performance, for years.

Compared to the rigid gears, this belt drive is elastic, and as such, it can accommodate a sudden change in torque. No lubrication needed, low maintenance costs, and less noise are what this belt drive offers, for more speed and power.

Fuel Injector

The purpose of this fuel injector, is not to merely deliver fuel into the engine cylinders, but to make sure it is the correct amount, for better performance, less emissions and little noise.

Additionally, it also ensures the fuel-release timing is perfect, for combustion to occur, effectively. It has:

  • A Nozzle

The nozzle interfaces with the engine’s combustion system to ensure smooth transmission of fuel.

  • An Interjector Body

This is where the nozzle is mounted and it contains the functional parts of the injector, the hydraulic circuit, and the hydraulic actuator.
